This is the first post of a series about my white kitchen remodel. We changed the floors, painted the oak cabinets white, and are in the slow process of upgrading our appliances to stainless steel. Follow along as we make these changes on a budget.
When we moved into our new homes, one of the first things to go was the old linoleum flooring. Kevin and I had our hearts set on reclaimed wide plank hardwood flooring. We got quotes from local contractors, and got some really bad news: our kitchen floor has an incline where the addition was built, so there was no way to lay wood flat. We had to either raise the floor (an extremely costly renovation), or go with a different flooring option.
These days, there are so many options for faux hardwood. We went with a textured vinyl flooring, which looks like hardwood but lays in one flat sheet across the floor. There is a layer of foam underneath, which softens the base, and then there is fiberglass to ensure the floor does not scuff, scratch, or tear. We love how multidimensional it looks and feels.
We hired out this project and the installation only took 2 days. What a great transformation! If you are thinking of vinyl as an option, don’t dismiss hardwood just yet. Home Depot and Lowe’s have great products available, and if you do the installation yourself, you can do it for about $5 to $6 a square foot. This wide plank vinyl flooring was rather costly – about $13 per square foot installed. If you can DIY, give it a try.
